Halloween Cupcakes

Are you in search of some really cute cupcakes for your Halloween or Harvest party?  If so, look no further.  I will show you step by step how to create these adorable cupcakes.

How adorable are these cute little Jack-O-Lantern cupcake.  First, here are a few tips to make these cupcakes look as realistic as possible.  The yellow color will represent the fire in the Jack-O-Lantern so it will need to be a very bright yellow.  There should be some definite contrast between the orange color of the pumpkin and the yellow color of the flame.  These cupcakes are dimensional which means you need to add the frosting in layers.  Finally adding a green stem not only gives your cupcakes an ascetically pleasing third color (which works wonders for all cakes and cupcakes) but also adds realism to the cupcake.

Buttercream is the perfect frosting for these cupcakes are it is delicious and easy to work with.  You can find two different buttercream recipes here.  I have recently begun using Wilton Performance Color System for tinting frosting and I’m really loving it.  You can find the Color System by clicking the link here.  For the pumpkin cupcakes, I kept it simple.  The yellow frosting uses only yellow tint.  The orange frosting uses only orange tint.  And the green frosting is a mix of blue and yellow tint.

When decorating I sometimes use parchment triangles to make frosting bags but have recently had issues with the bags tearing so I now prefer the disposable bags above over parchment triangle bags.

Step 1 of the Jack-O-Lantern cupcakes is the easiest step.  Simply frost the center of the cupcakes yellow.  This should be a smooth frost, so it’s easiest to simply apply the frosting with a small frosting spatula like the one found here.  You do not need to cover the entire surface of the cupcake, but do make sure the area you cover is large enough for the face of the Jack-O-Lantern.

Jack-O-Lantern cupcakes step 2 – adding the face

Creating the Jack-O-Lantern’s face is step 2.  Use the orange frosting in a decorator’s bag with star tip #16 to outline the face.  If you do not have tip #16, any small star tip can be used for the pumpkin face.  You do not want to use a large star tip as that is what will be used for the stem and the pumpkins will have a more interesting look if the same tip is not used for both.

After you have outlined the face, you simply need to cover the remainder of the cupcake with orange #16 stars.

The final step is to use the green frosting with star tip #32 (or any large star tip if you do not have #32).  This final touch really sets the cupcake apart as it adds the critical third color as well as adds a touch of realism to the creations.

When creating Jack-O-Lantern cupcakes you do not have to be perfect.  Most pumpkins are not perfect, most Jack-O-Lanterns are not perfect, and a few imperfections with the cupcakes gives them character and adds to the fun.  I also try to come up with different expressions for the cupcakes and even had my son suggesting expressions as I completed these cupcakes.  Among others, he suggested the one with the “sideways” face.
