One Room Challenge – Sofaless living space
Hi everyone and welcome! I’m so excited that you are here and thrilled to be joining the many designers before me to renovate my outdated space into a cozy modern sofaless living room as a guest designer for the One Room Challenge™. I hope you will follow along for the next 7 weeks. I will be posting detailed weekly updates here, as well as daily updates on Instagram and Pinterest. Be sure to follow along!
Before we jump right into my living room, which is in serious need of an update, let me introduce myself. I’m Sondra, I earned a degree in Computer Science at Tennessee tech, though blogging is way out of my comfort zone. My family, home, and pets are my passions and I love designing cozy spaces for my family and our friends.
I participated in the One Room Challenge™ a few years ago and have been looking forward to doing this room ever since. I want to say thank you to the entire team for allowing bloggers like myself to participate as guest designers. If you are not familiar with the ORC, it is a eight week event that encourages participants to completely transform one room in their home. This year they have also added a category for mini projects, so be sure to check those out also.
Now let’s take a peek at our living room as it is currently.

This room hasn’t had a major update in over a decade. The chairs were purchased many years ago, the coffee table was my brother’s when he was in college. The book cases were perfectly fitted into the space in our previous home, but never really fit in this room. I think the high ceilings and wide open spaces will be perfect for the modern open living room I have planned.
The window treatments were a gift from my Mom. She made them herself and I absolutely love them but they are too formal for the new room I have in mind.
The wall color was from about 10 years ago, and while I loved it then, it is well past its prime.
The Inspiration
This room has been many things over the years since we had the house built. It was a library before kids, a play room when the kids were really little, a sitting room after we had the basement finished and moved the playroom down there. Now I would like for it to be a more cozy space. I want swivel chairs, no sofa, and a place where our family can play board games, card games, and just enjoy each others company.
The Adjacent Room
The room I’m renovating is adjacent to the Dining Room we renovated a few years ago. The rooms share a foyer and open hallway, but are not directly in line with each other. Since they are so open, the style needs to be similar, but not identical.
